"Although most of us are aware of the fact that air pollution exists, most of us do not know much about the actual nature of pollution, in part because we do not know much about the nature of the chemistry of "healthy" air or of the specific mechanisms through which pollution is released into the atmosphere.
Air is, of course, not a single substance but a complex and dynamic chemical mixture. The primary components of air are two different bases: Oxygen (so vital to all of us mammals) makes up only about 21 percent of air as measure by volume. Nitrogen actually accounts for about 78 percent of the volume of the air around us. Air also contains a number of other elements, including argon (like helium one of the inert gases, which is also a component of air), along with carbon dioxide and hydrogen, methane and ozone and ? varying rather substantially from place to place and time to time ? water vapor."
