This paper assays differences in the experiences of traditional and
nontraditional college students from several perspectives, asking questions and seeking answers regarding specific issues of gender, responsibility, and culture. The paper also addresses the motivational influences of nontraditional students in the ways in which they vary as well as the ways in which they remain constant. Resources are also examined in terms of determining what makes an essentially successful educational undertaking for both traditional and nontraditional students, with the focus on nontraditional students being the many responsibilities and roles they often have to juggle, such as putting their children into day-care. As adult student/parents are a very large group and are comprised of individuals of all genders, ages, and races, this paper works to narrow down this general definition of the nontraditional student by focusing on females who have children and must balance their roles of student and parent in a way that facilitates both their growth and development and that of their offspring, who are also affected by the process.

"Most college students usually view the higher educational experience as
challenging and rewarding both socially and academically. Traditionally, students enter college immediately after graduating from high-school, when they are seventeen or eighteen years old. However, there is also the paradigm of the nontraditional college student, who has followed a different track or path that has led them to pursue higher education. This nontraditional student is often defined through his/her age, which is seen to be significantly older than that of the typical high-school graduate who is going immediately to college, and the number of nontraditional students at colleges and universities across the country is on the rise. At present, "approximately 36% of college students today are age 25 or older. Increased enrollment of adults in college over the past 20 years has stimulated research comparing traditional- and nontraditional-age students" (Justice and Dornan, p. 236)."
