This paper explains that, in examining learner characteristics and the readiness to learn of nurses in an emergency room department, it is necessary to discuss the importance of developmental stages in the learning process. The author points out that, progressing through these stages not only provides a nurse with expanded knowledge at each successive level but also enables them to learn how to learn and how to apply their learning to their profession. The paper relates that, early in their nursing careers, nurses begin to learn the way to resolve multiple, conflicting opinions.

"In examining learner characteristics and the readiness to learn of nurses in an emergency room department, it is necessary to discuss the importance of developmental stages in the learning process. According to Perry (1998) learning theory identifies different stages of learning, which consist of an early stage in which learners process information through absolute standards. Authority figures, such as nursing instructors, "know and teach absolute and measurable truth, and conflicting answers are ignored and/or dismissed." Early in their nursing careers, nurses begin to appreciate that multiple opinions exist. Conflicting opinions are considered a temporary state that will be resolved by health care authorities as they find the one true answer."
