"Adopting a child can be a richly rewarding experience for all concerned: the birth parents can be filled with a feeling of "doing what's right" for the child; the adoptive parents are able to raise a child they otherwise would not be able to raise, and; the child may grow up in a home materially and emotionally more stable than in the birth home (Sachs, 82). Yet in the United States, years of stigma attached to the adoption process are difficult to overcome. Each of the parties in an adoption may be pressed with a negative label: "promiscuous," "barren," and "illegitimate" may be used to describe the birth mother, adoptive mother and child, respectively (Gibbs, 87). As increasing numbers of women have put off having children until their 30s and even 40s, infertility has become increasingly commonplace.
