In this paper, it is shown that smoking does provide temporary success in appearing cool under peer pressure. Addiction, however, may appear cool to certain groups, but does very little to garner a long-term acceptance by those that partake in this bad habit. The paper argues that, in this manner, smoking is a superficial tool for social acceptance, which cannot provide long-term friendship or social status.
From the Paper:
"1: Parallel Argument: Support: Premise 1: Swearing violates societal virtues and norms of good behavior. Premise 2: Swearing is unproductive as a result of violating societal norms and reflects self-image and intercommunication skills. Therefore, swearing will result in less success in positive personal interaction, and devolves the citizen into a sub-standard social category. Opposition: Premise 1: Swearing does not affect how one is seen in society. Premise 2: Swearing is a good defense mechanism. Therefore the person swearing negates the existence of societal norms, and feels they are not real. Also, the counter productivity of using swearing deflects aggression from others by mirroring the vulgarity as a defense mechanism. Overall Rating: The findings for the greater good of society overrule societal negation in a supportive view that swearing is wrong."
