"Acid Rain: A Global Challenge

Acid rain has become one of the areas of deepest concern among environmentalists and due to widespread attention from the media, the problem is now a topic of popular concern. Acid rain is caused by emissions of sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides. Sulfur and nitrogen oxides are pollutants released by coal-burning electric power plants or motor vehicles and these pollutants are spewed into the atmosphere. There they are changed chemically and they fall back to earth as acid rain or snow.

Each year almost 25 million tons of sulfur dioxide are pumped into the sky. Nitrogen oxides formed when fuel is burned at high temperatures come principally from motor vehicle exhaust ..."
