Alexander Pope is widely considered by literary critics as the greatest English poet to ever have lived in the eighteenth century. Pope is third behind Shakespeare and Tennyson in being the most quoted poet in the English language. Some of the most used quotes of Pope come from An Essay on Criticism. Examples are: "To err is human to forgive is divine and A little learning is a dangerous thing" (Pope, 1711). After Pope's death and with the rise of Romanticism his poetry was cast aside and rebuked.
