AIDS and the UN
Examines AIDS in the developing world and the new United Nations commitment to the issue.
1,350 words (approx. 5.4 pages) | 5 sources | 2005 United States

Paper Summary:

This paper presents a discussion of the 2004-5 United Nations commitment to the AIDS pandemic as it is known to affect all matters of public health and impair economic development in Latin America, Asia and especially, in sub-Saharan Africa. The paper provides reference to UN statements, social scientific studies, the new Global AIDS Fund, collaboration with WHO, UN agencies, the World Bank and IMF.

From the Paper:

"In 2004, the United Nations resolved to devote millions in funding to increasing the access of patients in developing countries to AIDS treatment and basic medical care in a collaborative venture with the World Health Organisation. December 1, 2004 was declared the U.N. World AIDS Day in recognition of the ongoing epidemic, the need for ongoing public education avoiding the disease, and expanding treatment and care facilities. (UN 2005) The attention given to AIDS in Western developed countries tends to distract attention from a "Third World" scenario that is far worse in terms of the numbers of cases in many national populations, low understanding of how the disease is contracted, and totally deficient health and support services."
