828 words (approx. 3.3 pages) | 0 sources | 2006 United States

Paper Summary:

The paper shows how the book by Eudora Welty focuses on the literary elements of motif and imagery in "A Worn Path" via portraying Phoenix Jackson as representative of the mythical bird, the phoenix, throughout the story. The writer describes two different legends about the mythical phoenix. In conclusion, the writer posits that Jackson's long walk is similar to the phoenix's long flight and that she is steadfast in her goal and sure she can make it, despite her advanced age.

From the Paper:

"Phoenix Jackson also represents the phoenix symbolically. She stands for the spirit of overcoming a struggle. No matter what comes her way, her stubborn determination keeps her going to keep her grandchild from dying. She has a spirit that allows her to survive all obstacles. Phoenix not only as a name for the main character, but also as a symbol for this character's life. During the story, Welty shows evidence that Phoenix Johnson has burned and risen from the ashes; this evidence is shown through the physical description of Phoenix and the situations she is involved in. It is the people and situations that she encounters along the way that facilitate not only her burning, but later her resurrection. This burning is a slow and painful process that takes place during her trip in to town. The very journey itself is trying for Phoenix because she is exceptionally old and weak, not to mention her memory isn't notably trustworthy."
