The paper further evaluates the lives of the people in the main family unit through elements of social work and discusses how social work would have played a part in the life of Ruth.

From the Paper:

"James McBride offers the reader the opportunity to look into the lives of a family that breaks the mold of what is considered "normal" in our society. McBride writes this book reflecting on the life of his mother in relation to his own and the reader can perceive that through time, this comparison allows McBride to finally understand his mother's existence. When asked how he was able to interview his mother for the contents of the book McBride stated, "...I'd sort of spin her into it...she got to the point where she could talk comfortably about things that were comfortable...I would gently nudge her about the other things that were not as easy to talk about..." (McBride "Interview" 1). A woman of Polish-Jewish decent, Ruth came to the United States with her parents, anticipating a new and prosperous life."
