↶ Look Inside

Paper Summary:

This paper explains that, throughout the 20th century, the majority of political and economic changes have consistently failed to boost the socioeconomic or political conditions of the ordinary Mexican people. The author points out that, present-day Mexico, struggling to find itself, has been immersed in a state of continuous economic and political upheaval ever since the revolution of 1910. The paper relates that the ruling class continued to separate itself from the working classes and peasants. By the mid to late 60s, the poor were prepared to revolt, encouraging many new left-wing organizations to form and forcing the Mexican government to use military force to squash the post-1968 guerrilla uprisings.

From the Paper:

"From the beginning, the revolution of 1910 was an attempted overthrow by the poor and disenfranchised peasants of the then dictator Porfirio Diaz who had ruled Mexico with assistance from both the United States and other European power interests from the years 1876 to 1910. Once the overthrow was successful, there were numerous attempts to re-stabilize the government and to promote economic development. During the 1920's an attempt was made to regain stability by the wealthy revolutionary generals. Those generals brainstormed and later created the Revolutionary National Party or PRN in 1929. This party eventually became the party who until recently was still on top of its game in Mexico today - the PRI. Mexico, like the United States and the majority of the world, fell into a depression in the late 20's and early 30's son after the party was formed."
