"At the time of its creation in 1905, the French considered Henri Matisse's painting, 'Woman with the Hat', so scandalous that Henri and Madame Matisse avoided the Salon d'Automne (where the painting was exhibited) for fear of poor treatment. Leo Stein, the American who purchased what would become one of the century's most famous works, commented that it was "the nastiest smear of paint I had ever seen." Radical because of Matisse's new approach to color and portraiture, 'Woman with the Hat' and the Fauvism movement changed the Salon, art in France, and all art that followed."
