This paper analyzes William Styron's 'Darkness Visible' in which Styron describes complaints of lethargy, sleeplessness, anxiety, alienation, confusion, and cognitive disturbance. His presenting problem was major depression, in combination with Halcion addiction. He had several strengths that helped him successfully combat his illness. The paper reviews his description of his experiences in a detached, almost clinical, manner. It seems possible that he does so in order to be able write about a painful period in his life in a manner suitable for publication.

"The book 'Darkness Visible', by Willaim Styron is an interesting case study of mental illness. However, it is also an equally fascinating and introspective autobiography of a man who has struggled through suicidal depression and won back the freedom to live his life. Stryon's book, although short, offers insight into this illness with a forthright point of view unavailable to an individual who has not experienced it. Case Study Styron (1992) describes the case of a man who complains of lethargy, sleeplessness, anxiety, alienation, confusion, and cognitive disturbance. The presenting problem was described as Major Depression, also called Clinical Depression. Halcion addiction was secondary or exacerbating condition. This addiction resulted from treatment of the patient's insomnia. The chief complaint had an effect on a wide array of the patient's activities."
