The paper examines the role of strategic management and planning with respect to opening a neighborhood coffee shop. The paper defines strategic management as the science of formulating, implementing and evaluating cross-functional decisions that enables an organization to achieve its objectives.

From the Paper:

"The second step in control is performance improvement (or, alternately, correction of poor performance). Strategic management flows from an end goal. If that goal is not being met, measures must be in place to rectify that situation. Benchmarking can be used to measure the success of the coffee shop versus its competitors. Training systems should be implemented to ensure a high standard of performance even in the face of high staff turnover."
