"Lobbying by special interest groups occurs at virtually every level of politics all the way up to the White House. Typically, in the case of lobbying efforts directed at the sitting U.S. president, lobbyists contribute large sums of money in the neighborhood of many tens of thousands of dollars (and not infrequently, much more, especially over time), for the opportunity to visit the White House and join the president or vice president for a meal at the White House. Sometimes, the highest contributors receive invitations to sleep over in the Lincoln Bedroom, as was often reported during the Clinton administration."
