From the Paper:

"According to Turner and Sibonga, "The prevalence of osteoporosis and the number of hip fractures are increasing at an alarming rate" (p. 276). The National Osteoporosis Foundation (NOF) reports that the disorder represents a major public health threat for almost half a million Americans, or 55 percent of the people 50 years of age and older (Fast Facts, 2008). According to the NOF, "In the U.S. today, 10 million individuals are estimated to already have the disease and almost 34 million more are estimated to have low bone mass, placing them at increased risk for osteoporosis" (Fast Facts, p. 2). While Caucasian women are considered to be at highest risk for osteoporosis, Hispanic, Asian, and African American women are also at significant risk (Larkey, Day, Houtkooper & Renger, 2003)."
