This paper discusses, describes and analyzes the 1974 Supreme Court case, Cleveland Board of Education vs. Jo Carol Lafleur. The paper explains that the case concerned whether it was the right of the school or the pregnant teacher to determine when the teacher should start her maternity leave. The paper describes the arguments presented by the Cleveland Board of Education and those of Jo Carol Lafleur, as well as the Supreme Court ruling on those arguments. The paper also explains that, as a result of this case, pregnant teachers in the present-day U.S. school system can now determine, in conjunction with both the institution's administrators and medical professionals, when it is appropriate to begin their maternity leave.

"Sometimes it is easy to forget that what is taken for granted in the year 2005 was not always a fact in earlier years--even a few decades ago. Such is the case with maternity leave. Today, there is no prescribed time for a pregnant woman to stop working. It depends on a variety of factors such as physical health, energy level, ease or complication of the pregnancy, doctors' recommendations and the specific job. Some women begin their leave in the seventh or eighth month. Others work up until the last week, or even day of their term."
