Paper Summary:

This paper provides a description of the Islamic religion with some historical background, and an explanation of the varying sects that exist within.

From the Paper:

"The history of Islam centers around Muhammad. He was born around
five-seventy C.E. and was raised by his extended family, due to the death of his parents in his early childhood. As Muhammad grew, he found polytheism dissatisfying and came to believe in one God, Allah. Around the age of forty, he began to have religious revelations. During these miraculous visions, he received "revelations" or "messages" from Allah. He memorized these revelations and taught them to his followers. They have since been recorded in the Qur'an, the Muslim's scripture which is believed to be the inspired word of Allah, given to Muhammad by the archangel Gabriel.
Muslims believe in one god, Allah, along with angels, prophets who brought His teachings to mankind, in a Judgment Day when all men will be held accountable for their actions and in Allah's complete authority of life after death and human destiny. This new faith was not widely accepted in Muhammad's hometown of Mecca. This caused a movement known as the Hijirat, or "the flight" in which Muhammad and his followers moved to the city of Medina, which means "City of the Prophet". The Hijirat marks the beginning date on Islamic calendars."
