Impact of Sea Level in Venice

Impact of Sea Level in Venice
A look at the impact the sea level has on the city of Venice.
970 words (approx. 3.9 pages) | 3 sources | APA | 2008 United States

Paper Summary:

This paper examines the 1300 year old city of Venice in Italy, which is on top of the list of the world's most endangered cities. The author explains the reason for this, explaining that Venice is sinking because of flooding caused by global warming as well as the city's geological location and geology. The paper examines the strategies that the city of Venice, along with concerned international organizations, is taking on solving the problem with the floods. The paper also takes a look at how this phenomenon has caused the tourist industry in Venice to thrive but cautions that it is this kind of overcrowding that drives prices up and renders the city unlivable to the locals. This paper includes tables.

From the Paper:

"The City of Venice, along with concerned international organizations, is working on solving the problem with floodgates in the Lagoon entrance, as well as raising the pavement in low-lying parts of the city. Much of the raising of pavement has been done, but unless water barriers are made permanent, turning the Lagoon into a fresh-water lake, nothing else can be done. The high water arrives about every two weeks and sometimes is higher than previous times. And some believe it is getting worse, all to the benefit of the tourist trade."
