This paper gives an overview of the history of midwifery, one of the oldest female-dominated medical professions, and explains how the need for midwifery declined due to the rise of male-dominated obstetrics. The author describes how the recognition in the 1940s that nurse midwifery was autonomous and a profession in its own right led to the establishment of a national organization of certified nurse-midwives. The author explains that one of the most important contributions of nurse midwifery is the establishment of free standing birth centers. The paper also gives an overview of what nurse midwives offer and what is required of them.

"Nurse midwives recognized the need to establish organizations and systematize and modernize nurse midwifery education. Mary Breckinridge was one of the first to create an organization of nurse midwives to make their services more accessible to underprivileged people, especially children. She founded the Frontier Nursing Service (FNS) in 1925 to provide professional health care in one of the poorest and isolated regions in America (Castlenovo, 2003). It was established as a private charitable organization to serve desolate areas in Kentucky. It was comprised of nurse midwives trained in England. Breckinridge and FNS are credited for the establishment of the first nurse midwifery school in 1929."
