This paper discusses how Diabetes Milletus affects the onset of Alzheimer's disease and what can be done to reduce risk. The writer describes some studies that have shown that developing Diabetes Milletus Type II significantly increases the risks of vascular dementia or Alzheimer's later in life. Further, while onset of diabetes previous to 65 years seems to lead to vascular dementia, onset after 65 contributes more to the risk of Alzheimer's. Some theories about the relationships between vascular dementia and Alzheimer's have been postulated, but not proven. The paper concludes that ongoing research into the accuracy of these findings may lead to substantial AD discoveries in the next decade.

"In January 2009, a study in the journal Diabetes showed that, in twin studies, developing Diabetes type II before age 65 led to a 125% higher risk of developing AD (5). The risks attributed to Vascular Dementia are higher still, and concern people who develop Diabetes at any time in their lives, as the time of treatment seems to be more important than duration of life with Diabetes (5). It also found that the risk is two-fold. Having higher than normal levels of glucose can contribute to Vascular Dementia, and the body's inability to properly use insulin contributes to Alzheimer's."
