Alexander the Great

Paper Summary:

This paper analyzes the character of Alexander the Great. It describes his personal history, and why he was called the "Great". The paper lists his military achievements, as well as countries and empires that he conquered and goes on to describe him as the most successful military commander in history.

"Modern opinions of Alexander range from the idea that he was on a divinely-inspired mission to unite the human race, to the belief that he was a megalomaniac who was desired world domination. However, he is remembered as a legendary hero in Europe and throughout Southwest Asia and Central Asia, and most ancient sources either glorify him or denigrate him, thus making it difficult to evaluate his true character. The majority of the sources refer to the growing instability and megalomania during the years following Gaugamela, yet this may simply reflect the Greek stereotype of an orientalizing king. Nevertheless, the debates continue concerning the same issues, including whether Alexander was actually attempting to better the world by his conquests, or whether he intended to rule the world for his own benefit and glory."
