"Miles away but not far enough from that moment, I laughed despite myself up there on the mountain. Did I really try to run him over? It just didn't seem like anything I would ever do. I guess I could still surprise myself from time to time...fear and pain can incite strange behavior in even the most docile person.
"He wasn't the first one to abuse me, and he wasn't the worst one, either. But of all the people that had hurt me the worst, I was the biggest criminal of them all. I had been practicing ritual self-abuse since I was fifteen. I ran away from home, abused drugs, and had stayed fairly unstable in love and life for years. I was getting to the point where I didn't want to be alive anymore, and I think that the incident where my head got put through a wall was just the last straw for me. I'd snapped like a firecracker on the Fourth of July. My fuse was lit and my time was short. I was ready to blow something up ..."
