↶ Look Inside

Paper Summary:

This paper presents a discussion of the morality of capital punishment. A fictional setting is created in which to explore the topic. A visiting ethicist arrives in town and helps the elders address the questions of how they should systematically think about the morality of capital punishment and whether or not they should adopt it. Sources from relevant literature are used to support the arguments made.

From the Paper:

"Capital punishment, I told them, is a legal state execution of a convicted criminal. Murder is the most common crime for which this penalty is imposed, although it has been imposed for crimes of treason, rape, kidnapping, and even armed robbery. Today most executions are conducted by lethal drug injection, a drug that is administered by needle into the victim. This has become the "death of choice", if you will, due to the sterile environment and atmosphere. However, electrocution is still used in some states, and the gas chamber was a very common form of execution until the last few decades. The history of state executions is long and varied. Capital punishment was used widely during the Middle Ages, especially for crimes against the state and church. England, during the 1700's, had more than two hundred capital offenses, most were abolished in the next century and in 1969, England abolished capital punishment completely (World Book 1985)."
