From the Paper:
"5:20, 5:18, 5:15. The miles ticked off, one by one, at a suicidal pace that left my lungs screaming for anything but more. Yet through the colorful autumn woods I strode, the cool wind rushing by my face. The thumping of my feet on the soft dirt, rough rocks and harsh roots made for a melodic tone that only a runner could love. The occasional crunching of leaves and twigs added to the joyful beat, and the trees, with the wind blowing through them, were like the thousands of fans at a rock concert, screaming and cheering. If they were the fans, then who was the performer? Like so many days before, the performers were both of my running shoes, securely attached to my feet, taking the brunt of the impact with Mother Nature. Surely, with all of their performances, they must be tired, right? If they were, I never heard a thing of it."
