Paper Summary:
This paper explains that essays "I Want to be Average" by Mike Rose and "America the Beautiful: What We're Fighting For" by Dinesh D'Souza both discuss that having fate determined by an outside force allows people's freedom of will to be violated thus insuring their control and lack of inspiration. However, the author relates that each essay uses a unique approach in order to capture the audience's attention and convey their point of view. The essay by Rose taps into a common experience endured by every adult and student, the paper states, while D'Souza appeals to the audience's emotion by using current and historical events. The paper concludes that Rose's essay is more effective because he uses real experiences, which make his writing more believable.
From the Paper:
"Rose in his description of his life experience gives the readers many common events that they can relate to, but as a result has his audience take everything word for word. In this narration, there are no footnotes or general citations, allowing Rose to force his audience to believe every word he says. Without any citations, there is no clear evidence of any of these event occurring, therefore the author has to establish a tone of believability for his audience to ensure his persuasiveness. Everything is experience based, it comes straight from the author's mind and mouth."
