This paper explains that, in the ancient Judea under the Romans during the first century at the time of Jesus, a Jewish woman had very limited legal and economic rights. Within the merger of Roman and Jewish cultures during this period, Roman rule considered women second-class citizens. The author points out that this unequal view and treatment of Judean women in the first century was derived from the teachings of the Greek philosopher Plato. The paper relates that the ministry of Jesus radically improved the treatment of women in the first century Christian Church. He freely invited and encouraged women to follow and actively participate in his ministry and renewing the world. The paper features many of these early Christian women.

"Jesus had other female followers, who included his own mother, who was with him in a wedding feast in Galilee. The Scriptures do not state how many of them actually traveled with him and his male disciples (Graham 1994). But among them were Mary Magdalene, Joanna the wife of Cuza and Suzanna who helped the ministry of Jesus through their own means. It appears that many of these women not only associated with Jesus and his male disciples but also traveled with them and spent for the travels."
