"This study will compare the roles of women in three versions of the Faust legend: Christopher Marlowe's. Doctor Faustus, Goethe's Faust, and Thomas Mann's Doctor Faustus. The study will also consider historical and cultural settings insofar as they influenced the roles of women and the changing nature of those roles from version to version.The first generalization which can be fairly made is that the women of the earlier versions --- those by Marlowe and
Goethe --- are idealized creatures. Whether seen as whores or divinities, they do not resemble in any way the women of the real world. On the other hand, in Mann's version, a decidedly more modern work written in the 20th century, we find women who are realistic and believable beings, described in their humanity in all its degrees in great detail."
