The paper outlines the biographies of Walt Whitman, Anne Sexton and Yusef Komunyakaa and their respective poems: "A Noiseless, Patient Spider", "The Starry Night" and "Facing It". The paper discusses how these poets all share an unbounded curiosity about the often complex and mysterious aspects of life as well as of death. The paper points out the many mythic images of life and death, the disillusionment, the mysteries of human existence and the frailties of life itself in these poets' works.
From the Paper:
"Considered as one of the most talented and important American poets of the 19th century, Walt Whitman, born near Hempstead, Long Island on May 31, 1819, was always "a liberal thinker" and often considered his encounter with French general Lafayette who once picked him up as a child and carried him through a crowd as a turning point in his long life. According to Edward Folsom and Kenneth M. Price, this event for Whitman acted as "a kind of laying on of hands, the French hero of the American Revolution anointing the future poet of democracy" in New York City, the "energetic city of immigrants where the new nation was being invented day by day" ("Biography: Walt Whitman," Internet)."
