Paper Summary:

This paper relates that while Sir Robert Peel advocated for a police system as an extension to the community, police today have become outsiders to the community, leading to a less effective form of law enforcement. The paper explains that Peel saw police as those who prevented crime while modern police officers are simply trying to keep up with the crimes that have already been committed. The paper further explains that Peel sought to put the police in a position of honor and duty, with an emphasis on upholding the law of the people, while today's policing leaves the law open for interpretation and causes police corruption. The paper discusses the public's lack of confidence in the police and asserts that if we do not revert to some of Peel's original ideas, modern policing will continue to suffer.

From the Paper:

"There have been multiple reforms in policing since Sir Robert Peel first reformed the British policing system in the early 1800s. Although some of his original ideas still remain, the core foundation to his plan has changed drastically. While Peel advocated for a police system as an extension to the community, police today have become outsiders to the community, at least when they are in uniform, and so Peel's views on policing have dissolved into a less effective form of law enforcement. Peel is still consider to have been one of the world's foremost visionaries in his field, and he is often called the father of modern policing, making it an indignity to see how different modern policing truly is when compared to the ideas he set forth when first reforming police work in England."
