It is evident that their views of this issue are similar in some ways and different in some ways. "In comparing the philosophies of Niccolo Machiavelli and Thomas Hobbes concerning unjustified wars, it is evident that their views of this issue are similar in some ways and different in some ways. In writing about government, politics, economics, and military conflict, Hobbes concentrated on the influence of the social contract, while Machiavelli focused his attention upon principles rulers should follow. Since they lived in different historical eras, their views about justifications for war were influenced by contemporary conditions, and this is reflected in some of their differences. In terms of the relationship between the sovereign and the citizens, both men believed in the need for a strong leader."
