It is occasionally said that one can gain a deep understanding of a culture by looking at its legends and beliefs. In the case of Ancient Eastern China and ancient Greece, there is much truth in that statement, inasmuch as the preoccupations, fears and values of both cultures are expressed by their depiction of the underworld or afterlife as some might call it.
