"Ulysses" and "The Kraken"
An analysis and comparison of Alfred Lord Tennyson's poems "Ulysses" and "The Kraken".
1,367 words (approx. 5.5 pages) | 9 sources | MLA | 2009 United States

Paper Summary:

The paper provides an outline of the Victorian period of change when Tennyson wrote both "Ulysses" and The Kraken". The paper shows how both poems address the theme of morality from the viewpoint of death. The paper also demonstrates how both poems offer lessons for humanity; in "Ulysses" the lesson is to live life to the fullest and then in death one will not be regretful or unsatisfied, and in "The Kraken" the lesson is that we should be heedful of waking or disturbing that which is better left to lie.

From the Paper:

"The Victorian era extended from the 1830's to roughly 1900 in Britain. It was a time of rapid change and developments in all areas, "from advances in medical, scientific and technological knowledge to changes in population growth and location" (Shepard 2001). Queen Victoria was the ruling monarch at that time. She oversaw a period where there was notable progress in medicine, resulting in developments and growth in surgery and hospital buildings. In terms of politics, the British Empire was at its prime and looked to exporting their ideas overseas to Africa, Asia and to the West. Movements such as socialism, liberalism and feminism can be attributed to this time. Families of this era were usually large and this was accompanied by a strong work ethic within families. There was a sense of newness and modernity about this time."
