Written in 2009; 1,215 words; 7 sources; MLA; $ 41.95
Paper Summary:
This paper defines torture and discusses the history of torture, particularly since the Geneva Conventions of 1949. The paper specifically focuses on the differences between the United Nations and the United States' definition and outlook on torture. Also discussed is the US policy change at the apex of the War on Terror and the impact of the Military Commissions Act.
From the Paper:
"For the greater part of the last century, the major difference between US and International stances on torture is the time period of which the mistreatment is extended. Punishments and definitions of types of torture generally remained the same. For the United States, however, the policy changed significantly at the apex of the War on Terror. The Military Commissions Act made a historic move in altering both the US Constitution as well as openly defying UN International law that forbids torture under any conditions."
