Paper Summary:
This paper reviews the literature on the interaction between couples at the end of a serious relationship, focusing particularly on the type, amount and quality of communication that mark the end of days for human relationships. The paper compares the voluntary end of a relationship (at least voluntary on one side) with the involuntary ending of a relationship caused by death.
From the Paper:
"Knapp and Vangelisti (1996) have developed this concept of differentiation into a model of communication at the end of a relationship, noting that people will find their communication more conscribed at the terminus of a relationship. Good communication requires having something in common, and as people begin to differentiate, they will inevitably have less and less in common. As differentiation becomes increasingly pronounced, the style of communication will become increasingly superficial and the public aspects of it will become increasingly pronounced."
