The narrator is not necessarily the poet, although because of the use of "I" or "we," it may seem that way sometimes. In the poem "Richard Cory," the narrator is a male who is part of a group of males in a town or village ("on the sidewalk"), whom now we might say are boys who "grew up in the streets." They are probably about the same age as Richard Cory. The situation is one in which common, working people are observing a privileged person. "
