Few garments have such symbolic and universally understood meanings as the veil. Women of many cultures over the world have worn this garment for centuries. The veil is a fashion garment that is so entrenched in societal symbolism that it endures, regardless of the latest views of Parisian or New York couturiers. It is the purpose of this paper to explore the history of the use of veils in American society and compare and contrast its use there with the use of veils in the Arab societies, with special attention to the social and cultural contexts.
