Paper Summary:
The paper compares the views of intentionalists, who believe that Hitler had intended to exterminate the Jews all along, and functionalists, who believe that the bureaucracy worked on these ideas with Hitler and that it was a gradual process. The paper concludes with the writers own opinion, that history is learned so that we don't repeat it.
From the Paper:
"Goldhagen states that the German peoples had no problem with the Jewish policy because if they did, they wouldn't have cooperated with the government, just as they had when there was an attack on Christianity. The government didn't need to force Germans to kill the Jews because there wasn't any non-anti-Semitic Germans. He goes on to say that Hitler was adored by Germans peoples and was known to be wholeheartedly committed to the unfolding brutal eliminationist program (Goldhagen 205). He blames Germany's virulent culture and points out that other anti-Semitic countries weren't as widespread. This is because German anti-Semitism and the Holocaust were sui generis or unique of its kind."
