The KGB and FSB

The KGB and FSB
Compares and contrasts the Soviet KGB with the Russian FSB.
2,250 words (approx. 9 pages) | 9 sources | 2005 United States

Paper Summary:

This paper examines the Soviet KGB with the Russian FSB of the post-Cold War era. It is evident that there are significant differences between these two intelligence and security organizations, but also a number of similarities in terms of their primary national security responsibilities. The paper shows that as the post-communism successor to the KGB, the FSB was established in April of 1995 and inherited important former KGB tasks relating to foreign intelligence gathering, data analysis, and domestic counterintelligence, but it does not have the vast authority the KGB had to conduct unlimited internal security operations.
