The Creation of the World

The Creation of the World
A comparison of the background and content of the Biblical creation narrative and the Enuma Elish.
2,490 words (approx. 10 pages) | 6 sources | MLA | 2003 South Africa

Paper Summary:

This paper deals with the relationship between the creation account as found in Genesis and the Babylonian creation myth, the Enuma Elish. It gives a brief background and a detailed summary of each narrative, followed by a comparison between the two. A table is included which separates the book of Genesis into it?s Yahwist and Priestly document constituent parts.

From the Paper:

"The Enuma Elish provides us with a very extensive account of how Marduk fashioned the world. After having slayed Tiamat in battle he split her corpse in half. One half was used to create the sky and the other to create dry land. From her saliva he formed the clouds and her head was used for the mountains. From her eyes flowed the Tigris and Euphrates rivers - the two more important rivers in Babylon. After he had created the features on dry land he turned towards the sky and created the stars. They were arranged into their constellations, theirs and the moon's patterns were set, the calendar and seasons ordered and the sun's course was fixed."

I am a final year BA student and my majors are Ancient Near Eastern Culture and Biblical Archaeology. My particular field of interest is the ancient myths and stories that have found their way into the Bible and how contemporary Biblical writers were influenced by these stories.
