"The Best Man"

"The Best Man"
A comparative essay of Gore Vidal's "The Best Man" and the 2000 election.
864 words (approx. 3.5 pages) | 3 sources | MLA | 2001 United States

Paper Summary:

This essay compares the similarities of Gore Vidal's "The Best Man" and the 2000 electoral contest between George W. Bush and Al Gore.

From the Paper:

"All of the problems brought to the foreground in "The Best Man" still hold a considerable amount of water in today's political scene. Comparisons can be drawn to figures in races as recent as Bush and Gore in 2000. With all the conniving that has failed to be eliminated from politics over all these years it's hard to believe that a solid candidate has been offered. In Gore Vidal's "The Best Man" he dives headlong into a political race where the lead candidate, Bill Russell, has only a narrow lead on his opponent, Joe Cantwell. In a paper written by Vidal in 1964 he stated that he "wanted to examine the sort of men who are drawn to power in our society(Vidal, 1).""
