"The Awakening" and "Heart of Darkness"

This paper discusses and analyzes the novels "The Awakening" by Kate Chopin and "Heart of Darkness" by Joseph Conrad. Specifically the paper compares the employment and effect of experimentation in the two novels. The paper discusses how, due to the fact that the two novels are written by a man and a woman, they use different themes and employ different types of experimentation.

"It is clear these writers wanted desperately to portray their characters as real people with real problems, rather than romantic, larger-than-life characters. Edna faces the problems of many women of her time. She may be "the sole object of his existence" (Chopin 7), but she wants more, and she wants to be taken seriously. Today, that does not seem to be anything but normal, but at the time, many saw her as selfish and self-serving. In fact, many people did not understand why she killed herself at the end of the story. They did not understand that she was already "dead" in her life anyway. Chopin's look at women was not common in the nineteenth century, and so her work was controversial. That is not uncommon in experimental works, they are often ahead of their time, and misunderstood at the time they are first unveiled. "
