"Malt does more than Milton can/To justify God's ways to man" refers to Milton's Paradise Lost and typifies Houseman's argument. The poet describes the breweries in England, wondering why anyone would prefer poetry to beer for curing malaise, especially those ?fellows whom it hurts to think.? Ale is the drink of choice for anyone who wishes to see the world through rose-colored glasses. When drunk, the ?world seemed none so bad,? declares Terence; but ?the tale was all a lie; the world, it was the old world yet.? "
