"Anthropologists Robert Redfield and Oscar Lewis both wrote about the Mexican community of Tepoztlan; Redfield in 1930 and Lewis in 1951. However, their conclusions were dramatically different generating a controversy within the profession. In fact, both studies provoked serious consideration and rethinking on the part of anthropologists with respect to certain issues inherent in the nature of field work and with the interrelationship between theory and empirical data. The purpose of this paper will be to discuss these two men and how their backgrounds and the time period within which they worked influenced not only their approaches but their differing conclusions.
