Paper Summary:
In this article, the writer first discusses osmotrophic protoctists, before considering the simplest amoeboid phagocytic protoctists, the archezoa amoebas. The writer then discusses the strengthening of the cytoskeleton, before looking at various forms and functions of cell skeletons that have evolved from Golgi apparatus secretions.
From the Paper:
"Protoctists may feed by osmotrophy, phagocytosis or a combination of the two. Osmotrophic feeding involves the absorption of organic soluble matter across the cell membrane and these organisms often have simple support structures. In order for a cell to absorb a sufficient amount of matter, it must have a large surface area: volume ratio, a flexible membrane, and live in an area with a high concentration of soluble molecules. Organisms in phylum microspora fit these criteria by living within larger organisms as internal parasites and having flat structures. These microbes have simple structures that lack flagella and mitochondria, but consist of a flexible cell membrane around the cytoplasm and a nucleus."
