From the Paper:

"Span of Control may exist in various areas of a given corporation. However, it is most commonly identified in human recourses management in reference to the number of subordinates a supervisor can effectively manage. The concept hinges on the fact that the effectiveness of managers, in general, decrease as their span of control exceeds their optimal level. Natural limits placed on a supervisor's span of control resulted in companies staffing a large number of middle-managers capable of tasks like collecting, manipulating and presenting operational information. Today however, new technologies have emerged that ease the tasks of middle managers in the workplace. Recent technological developments have not only increased worker-productivity, but also offer corporations more flexibility and a widened span of control for middle managers."
