1,463 words (approx. 5.9 pages) | 7 sources | APA | 2007 United States

Paper Summary:

This paper discusses how Director Richard Attenborough took some strong liberties when adapting the play "Shadowlands" to film. It looks at how the movie version is vastly different from the play due to the creative decisions made by the director and the conventions of transposing from one genre to another. The paper discusses the following tools Attenborough used to adapt the play for film: visualization, sets, act divisions, scenes, music and symbols.

Outline:
Visualizing Scenes Only Mentioned or Implied in the Drama
Filming Settings Only Suggested in the Drama
Dramatizing Characters Only Mentioned or Implied in the Drama
Visualizing Literary Symbols or Motifs
Using the Camera and Editing to Move the Story into Cinema Time and Space
Muting or Erasing Act Divisions
Adding Music

From the Paper:

"The camera and editing was used in Shadowlands to move the story into Cinema Time and Space. Editing was used to speed up the action by cutting from one shot to another. To show point of view in cinema, the camera uses long shots, medium shots, and close-ups to vary the distance from the action; it uses eye-level, high- or low- angle shots to change the viewer's angle; and it uses panning, tracking, or crane shots to move the viewer in relation to the action.
