Richard Wagner and Peter Gabriel
A comparative analysis of the music of Richard Wagner and Peter Gabriel.
786 words (approx. 3.1 pages) | 6 sources | MLA | 2009 United States

Paper Summary:

This paper discusses how the progressive rock genre is another extension in the ongoing development of musical evolution and how, when comparing this type of music to that of the 19th century composer, Richard Wagner, we can see distinct patterns shine through. There is an obvious manner in how each song deals with the spiritual and the artistic, and how each artist finds a way to express themselves through their music. For comparison purposes, the progressive rock artist chosen to sit in contrast against Wagner's "Siegfried's Funeral March" is Peter Gabriel and his song, "Red Rain."

From the Paper:

"Gabriel is a well known progressive-rock artist that had his beginnings with the group Genesis, along with other well-known prog-rock artist Phil Collins. This group enjoyed mainstream success, and continued to do so even after Gabriel's departure from it in 1975. He went on to produce 11 solo albums and contributed greatly to various musical and social justice causes; these include the World of Music, Art, and Dance (WOMAD) festivals as well as WITNESS, which is an organization devoted to human rights awareness. Peter Gabriel has also taken his artistic talent behind the music, and has founded his own multimedia and publishing businesses. Gabriel is recognized as a major contributor to the progressive art rock scene, and has definitely accomplished what this genre of music set out to do: elevate music to the same level as art. "
