"Rhetoric is based largely on the principle of challenge and response. Great oratory is often needed during challenging times, as was the example of Logan and Dunmore. This principle is true for for all three rhetorics that are being discussed in this paper. Any type of threat to a culture, such as one that will affect the way of life, needs a response that involves great oratory. The Native Americans were threatened by the White settlers, which posed great rhetorical challenges attempting to persuade the settlers to fairness and compromise. The earliest report of Native Americans addressing the English settlers is that by Powhattan in 1609, which was written by Captain John Smith. "
