Renaissance Vs. Romanticism
A comparison of the Renaissance and the Romantic periods of art.
912 words (approx. 3.6 pages) | 4 sources | APA | 2008 United States

Paper Summary:

The paper explores the sculpture styles of the Renaissance period and contrasts these ideals to the painting styles of the Romantic period. The paper discusses how the Renaissance artists were obsessed with self discovery and understanding while the Romantic period focused more on the ideal behind the work. The paper concludes that both periods of work have their merits and should be appreciated for their own specific and unique characteristics.

From the Paper:

"As we know the literal definition of Renaissance is from the French meaning "rebirth". Some of the most important developments during this time were the use of perspective to create depth, the use of contrapposto in sculpting to create motion, and the use of human expression in art to convey emotion. These techniques embody the renaissance obsession with self discovery and understanding, as artists attempted to capture reality in their work (Sharpe, 2007). Also at this time, there was a movement to return to the spirit of Greek culture, which focuses on the ideal human. This ideal was usually conveyed in Greek sculpture prior to the Renaissance by idealizing the "perfect body type"."
